My Son's Friend, Puruji

So it’s Puruji. His friend. Or so we have made him believe. At least tried to do so! I don’t quite know who Puriji is. My mother in law tells me he is a toddler who Adiy meets when he goes out for his evening stroll with his nanny.

Puruji, I am told has a tricycle which has an electric headlight. He flashes his headlight every evening when he sees Adiy. And our boy looks at him. That’s all there is to their friendship at this moment. But we have taken it as a sign of a start of a great relationship. He is Adiy’s first friend.

And what do we do with the knowledge? We ‘fool’ Adiy.

So Adiy’s making a fuss with the food? See Puruji is coming to play with you. He will come only if you eat all your food.
Adiy’s not sleeping? You know Puruji is sleeping too. You sleep too. Then both of you could play.

I don’t think Adiy understands any of it at the moment. I don’t think he even knows that the kid who flashes his cycle’s headlight is named 'Puruji'. Yet, without really taking cognizance of the fact, Puruji has become a large part our family. Funny, I am yet to meet him.

I wonder what his parents would think when they know about this. That unbeknownst to them, we have made their two-year-old son an ideal!

More importantly, I wonder how Adiy would react when he starts understanding everything we say. At this moment, of course, it us just sounds for him. He probably reacts to the tone more than words, although I believe he understands some stories that my wife tells him while putting him to sleep every night. Or is that way too much for a 10-month old to apprehend? I am not sure, I was an infant a long time back. 33 years back.

I and my wife laugh about it when I tell her that some day Adiy is going to be pretty amused when he gets to know what all we did to get him to open his mouth just some that he could take that spoonful of food in. Till then, I suppose it just our little trick.

Thank you Puruji!
